If you have an ear open to new technologies, you’re sure to have heard of VoIP. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a set of applications that lets you make phone calls over the Internet. It has already started replacing telephone networks, with people and businesses opting to cancel their traditional phone line and use VoIP instead. Voice over IP was originally designed to provide voice communication between computer users in different locations. Although it still has this request, it was developed into a telephone network in its own right. Those who use VoIP can call any phone anywhere in the world and can receive calls from fixed telephone connected to the Internet or local area network (LAN).

It all began in 1995 when Israel computer enthusiasts is the first computer to respect the vote. In the same year, this technology was developed in a program called Internet Phone Software. All that was needed to talk to another computer user is a modem, sound card, speakers and a microphone. The scanning software and compression of the audio signal before sending them on the Internet in data packets. These voice connections can occur between computers that have installed the software. The sound quality was very low - far from the quality of standard telephone connections.

Technology has continued to be developed by 1998 and walkways was created to allow PC-to-phone connections. Later that year phone-to-phone connections that have used the Internet for voice transmission have been put in place. These telephone phone connections still need a computer to launch the appeal, but once the connection was established, callers could use a regular telephone set.

There are currently many VoIP services available for residential and commercial. Some of these still rely on PC to PC, but connections May offer other services such as PC to phone and phone to phone. Internet phones are available that plug into the sound card or USB port of a computer. These phones have number plates and May ringers that allow you to use the same as that of traditional phones. The computer can be completely ignored by connecting a phone directly to a broadband modem (either DSL or cable).

The first step in using VoIP is to convert your voice into digital data. This is done by “sampling” your voice - dividing the signal to analog sound distinct steps that can be assigned a number value. Once your voice is digitized, the data can be compressed. This digital compression of data is divided into “packages” of about 1500 bytes that can be transferred over the Internet. As the voice data packets contain information on their origin, destination and a date which allows them to be rebuilt in the right order.

Once they arrive at their destination, they are reassembled and converted from digital to analog, so that the recipient can hear your voice. For the voice data to be transmitted without delay, a broadband Internet connection is necessary. Many households and businesses are already using broadband (ADSL or cable) and the addition of voice over IP is relatively simple.
