How to Reducing Noise In Audio Files
The beauty of digital audio is the promise of perfect quality. No clicks, hiss or scratches that were the standard vinyl and tape recordings. This does not mean that all digital audio is without noise. Far from it. Poor recordings can still be made in the media and digital recordings which were transferred from analog (vinyl records or cassettes) to digital will retain a portion of their noise. Fortunately, cleaning digital audio is a fairly easy process. There are many software on the market specially designed for the reduction of certain types of noise in digital recordings.
All are not suitable for all types of noise, it is therefore important to analyze the type of noise you’re trying to get rid of. Most software noise reduction is a function of background to suppress the breath. It works by capturing a profile of background noise. The profile is used to create a filter that corresponds to the characteristics of the noise. To use this feature, you must select a quiet section of the audio to get a sample of the noise you want to reduce it. A good place to take your sample is between songs or the first second or two before the audio actually begins.
The sample must not be long - half a second is all you need - but it may not be music or voice - it should represent a silencer. This noise profile will help reduce exactly the type of noise in your audio recording. It is useful to reduce the breath of substance, but clicks and pops need another type of treatment. Pops and clicks are two flavors - digital and analog. Digital clicks can be caused by an overload processor when you make a digital recording. The inscription “stop” for a moment and skip creates a very short click. Digital cliques are easy to detect and most software noise reduction does this automatically.
Analog clicks and POPs are caused by scratches and imperfections on vinyl and their duration is much more clicks digital. To remove this type of noise, a special filter is required to automatically detect and remove unwanted sound. The parameters can be adjusted to match the size and frequency noise.
There are several audio packages on the market that are specifically designed to reduce noise on vinyl and cassette recordings. They let you capture digital audio by connecting a turntable or cassette deck to the sound card on your computer. Once the audio is stored on the computer, it can be processed to extract the breath of substantive and clicks. Most presets you give adequate results and you’ll be able to enjoy your old recordings in the digital domain.
